I got 3 estimates for a trenchless replacement of my sewer pipe from the front yard to the street. I was very impressed by Alex who came out to look over the project in order to make an accurate estimate. He made notes of my concerns about certain large plants which would need to be uprooted and assured me that they would be set aside and replanted. It was also necessary to remove 3 stones from a custom walkway near the entry point of their equipment and, again, Alex made a note of the extra attention required and included it in his written estimate. Alex explained the process, step by step from exposure of pipe, to hole digging, to permit and replacement. He gave me a best and worst case timeline (depending on when a city inspector would be available to sign off). The estimate was in my email box by the end of the day. The crew arrived on schedule and all work was done promptly and completed on schedule. There was just one hour when I was unable to flush the toilet due to the work in progress. Thomas was there to oversee the project and make sure things were done correctly and that care was taken to protect my landscaping and stone pathway. I could not be more satisfied with the work done and how much attention was paid by Thomas to leaving my property in good and clean, tidy repair. I recommend this company!Posted on Google gudni gudnasonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have had guys come out to snake a toilet when two other contractors had failed to clear the clog. Admittedly, it was not easy… I know this because their snake came with an inspection camera and a video feed. They had their work cut out for them. The clog was not just at the toilet, but continued far down the plumbing line. They worked really hard, we’re really fair and professional. Most of all they got the job done, and got it done right! Thanks! You will be my go to in the future.Posted on Google David SchneiderTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fantastic! TrenchFree connected me with Axel at Drain & Water to scope out my sewer line woes. Their thorough attention to detail at the free estimate and competitive pricing won me over, and they did not disappoint! Prompt, efficient, and high-quality work. I was kept updated every step of the way, turning what could have been a major headache into a stress-free repair.Posted on Google Sergio MunozTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Drain & Water have been servicing company facilities since the beginning of 2025 and without a doubt Axel and Thomas always get the work done in a timely manner at an affordable price.Posted on Google Karin McClungTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our sewer line backed up yesterday. This morning we were in desperate need of getting this problem fixed ASAP. Two years ago DRAIN AND WATER, INC had done an incredible installation of a TRENCHLESS DRAIN in our yard, so I called them to see if they also cleared blocked sewer drains. I spoke with Oscar, explained the situation and he arranged to have a truck come out. IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES, their truck arrived with Thomas and Axel who got right to work and had the blockage removed within 15 minutes! It was amazing! Axel and Thomas are true professionals, they were kind, courteous, and explained what needed to be done. They also gave us information about other services DRAIN AND WATER, INC offer. I highly recommend DRAIN AND WATER, INC and will definitely call them in the future for plumbing and drain problems. Thank you Oscar, Axel and Thomas, for a great job! TWO BIG THUMBS UP 👍👍 AND FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!

Traditional Pipe Installation Destroys What You've Built
You need new underground pipes installed, but the thought of excavation makes you sick to your stomach.
Traditional trenching means:
- Destroyed landscaping you spent years cultivating
- Torn-up driveways and patios requiring expensive restoration
- Weeks of disruption to your home or business
- Thousands in additional costs to repair the damage
- Lost property value from permanent scarring
In Silicon Valley, where property values are premium and every square foot matters, you can’t afford the collateral damage of old-school excavation methods.
What Is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)?
Horizontal Directional Drilling is an advanced trenchless technology that installs underground pipes, sewer lines, water lines, and utility conduits without digging trenches.
How HDD Works:
- Pilot Hole Creation – A small entry point is drilled, and a guided drill head creates a precise underground pathway
- Path Verification – Advanced tracking technology ensures accurate placement beneath obstacles
- Reaming – The pilot hole is enlarged to accommodate your new pipe
- Pipe Installation – New piping is pulled through the drilled pathway in one continuous section
- Minimal Restoration – Only small entry and exit points need minor patching
The result? Your new pipes are installed underground while your driveway, garden, pool deck, and landscaping remain completely untouched.

HDD vs. Traditional Trenching: The Clear Winner
Other Trenchless Plumbing Options
Cured-in-Place Pipe Lining (CIPP)
The most popular trenchless method. We insert a resin-saturated liner into your damaged pipe, inflate it, and cure it in place—creating a brand-new pipe inside the old one. Ideal for pipes with cracks, corrosion, or root intrusion.
Best for: Clay pipes, cast iron pipes, Orangeburg pipes, pipes with multiple issues
Pipe Bursting
When your sewer line is completely collapsed or severely damaged, pipe bursting breaks apart the old pipe while simultaneously pulling new HDPE pipe into place. Minimal digging required.
Best for: Collapsed pipes, severely deteriorated lines, pipe diameter upgrades
Pipe Relining & Brush-On Liner
Epoxy coating applied to interior pipe walls seals minor cracks and prevents future corrosion. Quick, cost-effective solution for early-stage damage.
Best for: Preventative maintenance, minor leaks, extending pipe lifespan
Frequently Asked Questions About Horizontal Directional Drilling
What is horizontal directional drilling used for?
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is used to install underground pipes, sewer lines, water lines, gas lines, and utility conduits without excavating trenches. It's ideal for installing pipes under driveways, buildings, landscaping, and other obstacles where traditional digging would cause significant damage or disruption.
How much does horizontal directional drilling cost in Silicon Valley?
HDD costs vary based on distance, pipe diameter, soil conditions, and obstacles. While HDD may have higher upfront equipment costs than simple trenching, you save thousands on restoration expenses. Most residential HDD projects range from $3,000-$15,000. Contact Drain and Water at (408) 564-0580 for a free, detailed estimate specific to your project.
Is horizontal directional drilling better than trenching?
For most Silicon Valley properties, yes. HDD eliminates property damage, reduces project timelines from weeks to days, preserves landscaping and hardscaping, and installs higher-quality seamless pipes. Traditional trenching only makes sense for very shallow, short runs in open areas without obstacles.
How long does horizontal directional drilling take?
Most residential HDD installations complete in 1-2 days, compared to 1-2 weeks for traditional trenching plus restoration. Commercial projects may take longer depending on scope, but still finish significantly faster than excavation methods.
Can you drill under my driveway, patio, or building?
Yes! That's exactly what HDD excels at. We routinely install pipes under driveways, concrete patios, pool decks, buildings, mature trees, and other obstacles that would be impossible or prohibitively expensive to excavate around.
What size pipes can be installed with HDD?
HDD can accommodate pipes from 2 inches to 48+ inches in diameter, depending on equipment and soil conditions. For residential sewer and water lines (typically 4-6 inches), HDD is highly effective. We'll assess your specific needs during the consultation.
Will HDD damage my landscaping or trees?
No. HDD requires only two small access points (entry and exit), typically 2-3 feet in diameter. Your landscaping, trees, driveways, and hardscaping remain completely untouched. This is the primary advantage over traditional trenching.
How deep can horizontal directional drilling go?
HDD can install pipes at depths ranging from 3 feet to 50+ feet, depending on project requirements and soil conditions. Most residential sewer and water lines install at 3-8 feet deep, well within HDD capabilities.
What soil types work with HDD?
HDD works in most soil conditions including clay, sand, gravel, and mixed soils common in Silicon Valley. Rocky conditions may require specialized equipment. Our pre-project assessment identifies any soil challenges and determines the best approach.
Is HDD safe for historic properties?
Absolutely. HDD is ideal for historic Silicon Valley homes (including properties from the 1800s) because it preserves original landscaping, hardscaping, and structures. We've successfully completed HDD projects on numerous historic properties throughout San Jose, Palo Alto, and surrounding areas.
Do I need permits for horizontal directional drilling?
Yes, most underground utility installations require permits. Drain and Water handles permit coordination and ensures all work meets local building codes and regulations in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
How long do HDD-installed pipes last?
Pipes installed via HDD often outlast traditionally installed pipes because they're installed in continuous sections with fewer joints—joints are the most common failure points. Modern HDPE and PVC pipes installed via HDD can last 50-100+ years. Ask about our limited lifetime warranty options.
Can HDD be used for sewer line replacement?
Yes! HDD is excellent for new sewer line installations. For existing sewer line replacement, we typically recommend pipe bursting or pipe lining (CIPP), which are also trenchless methods. We'll assess your situation and recommend the best trenchless solution.
What's the difference between HDD and pipe bursting?
HDD installs new pipes in new locations without existing pipes present. Pipe bursting replaces existing damaged pipes by breaking them apart and pulling new pipes through the same path. Both are trenchless, but serve different purposes.
Does Drain and Water offer financing for HDD projects?
Yes! We offer financing through Wisetack to make your trenchless pipe installation affordable. Ask about financing options when you call (408) 564-0580.
